TOOL IS LOOT
Wally Cardona (CA/NM/NYC)
Choreographed and Performed by Wally Cardona & Jennifer Lacey
April 13-14, 2012
Friday & Saturday, 8pm
[Friday March 13 includes post performance reception & talk-back]
Bessie Award-winning choreographer Wally Cardona has made a name for himself with large-scale works that incorporate a multitude of objects. Jennifer Lacey is a dance visionary based in Paris. To create Tool Is Loot Cardona and Lacey spent the first year of their collaboration working on separate continents, each collaborating with nondance experts (e.g., an opera singer, a salesman, a social activist) to create solos that are interwoven with a pas de deux they developed together during the summer. This collaboration... incorporated strangers' feedback, from the mundane to the profound, to show their inimitable, transfixing gifts as performers (Gia Kourlas, TimeOut New York).

FULL OF WORDS; TO COLOR ME DIFFERENT; LIGHT SHELTER
AXIS Dance Company (Oakland, CA)
FULL OF WORDS choreographed by Marc Brew; TO COLOR ME DIFFERENT choreographed by Alex Ketley; LIGHT SHELTER choreographed by David Dorfman
March 23-24
Friday & Saturday, 8pm
[Friday March 23 includes post performance reception & talk-back]
Renowned AXIS Dance Company is back to perform three pieces from their marvelous repertory of work created for them by world class choreographers. In U.K. choreographer Marc Brew's Full of Words, his edgy, intricate movement vocabulary asks questions of what it is to be human and who might dance while David Dorfman's Light Shelter explores states of light and darkness, community and isolation. In To Color Me Different, a duet by choreographer Alex Ketley in collaboration with poet Carl Snow, ...word and action seem to prosper and blossom in a genuine synthesis. Bodies thrust and retreat, enablers become partners. (Allan Ulrich, Voice of Dance).

KAWA: A SOLO FOR TWO
Hafiz Dhaou & Aïcha M'Barek/CHATHA (Tunisia/France)
March 16-17
Friday & Saturday, 8pm
[dessert, coffee & talk-back post performance
Global DanceFest warmly welcomes back Aicha M'Barek and Hafiz Dhaou, co-founders of the company CHATHA. M'Barek and Dhaou have created a piece performed by Dhaou to hauntingly beautiful music and the words of Palestinian poet Mahmoud Darwish to capture the essence of two things: of artists striving to maintain the purity of their art in a commercial world, and of coffee ("kawa" in Arabic) to the clink and clatter of coffee cups and the powerful fragrance which offers so many promises of awakening, contemplation and friendship.

JE DANSE ET JE VOUS EN DONNE À BOUFFER (I DANCE AND I GIVE YOU TO EAT)
Radhouane El Meddeb/La compagnie de soi (Tunisia/France)
March 9-10, 2012
Friday & Saturday, 7pm
[performances at 7pm; couscous served at 8:30pm]
Actor, filmmaker, choreographer, dancer, Radhouane El Meddeb infuses his dance with an aura of sly humor, tainted innocence and sensual movement.
The evocative title lets you easily imagine what this performance might be. Seated before the couscous maker, I prepare a couscous and I dance with all the grandeur, generosity and poetry of these two arts. Between tomato concentrate, courgettes, carrots and cinnamon: a leap, a glance, a suspension or a rupture. Between the semolina and a chasse croise, the dish simmers. It smells good, there's singing, dancing... even eating! -Radhouane El Meddeb
