The Lester A. Drenk Behavioral Health Center is celebrating in 2005 its
50th anniversary as a leading behavioral health provider in Burlington
County, N.J. The Drenk Center, formerly the Burlington County Guidance
Center, was founded in 1955 by Judge Lester A. Drenk to help the troubled
adolescent boys who appeared before him in court. Since then, the Drenk
Center has grown to serve more than 8,000 severely mentally ill children,
adults and seniors throughout southern New Jersey. The Drenk Center
believes that recovery is possible for all consumers. Its mission
statement states, "Partnering with people to provide accessible mental
health and social services that will improve our communities."

As part of our celebration, we have scheduled a ball on April 9, 2005, in
honor of Judge Drenk and the work of the Drenk Center. We need graphic
artwork for a ball book cover and for the advertisement for the ball. It
should reflect who we are and what our core beliefs are. It should be
eye-catching and make the reader want to read more in the advertisement or
in the ball book. The ball's proceeds will go toward helping severely
mentally ill children and adults throughout southern New Jersey through
the Drenk Foundation. The ball will be held at the Regency Palace in Mt.
Laurel, N.J.

All entries for this contest become the property of the Drenk Foundation.
The winner of the contest will receive a cash prize of $1,000 and
recognition for his or her graphic artwork at all events during the
anniversary year. The contest begins on Aug. 18 and ends on Sept. 15. The
winner will be announced on Sept. 20.

Maxwell Museum Show Features VSA North Fourth Art Center Native American Artwork

An exhibition of artwork by the Native American class at VSA North Fourth Art Center is a featured exhibit by The University of New Mexico’s Alfonso Ortiz Center for Intercultural Studies and the Maxwell Museum of Anthropology.

Native American Visions: Illusions of Traditional Life will show through November 2005, in the Ortiz Gallery of Maxwell Museum on UNM campus. The exhibit opens on Friday, June 24, 2005, when the public is invited to a reception from 6:00 P.M. – 7:30 P.M. for light refreshments and an appearance by storyteller and musician Ernie Dogwolf Lovato. The Ortiz Gallery is open Tuesdays-Fridays, 9:00 A.M. – 4:00 P.M.; Saturdays 10:00A.M. – 4:00 P.M. (closed Sundays and Mondays). Admission is free.

Exhibiting artists and Native American students include Nicky Arango, Elaine Archuleta, Cari Lynn Carlston, Lannette Silver, Joe Tenorio, Helene Valdez, Derrick Wanoskia and their teacher Sam Bautista.

A Native American class began several years ago at VSA North Fourth Art Center as a way for Native Americans with developmental disabilities to learn about Native American culture. Artist/ Teacher Sam Bautista is from Laguna Pueblo and knows from nearly ten years teaching art to people with disabilities that Native Americans with disabilities suffer culture loss just as other Native Americans can when they are not in touch with their traditions. “For Native Americans,” Bautista explains, “art is not just a form of expression but is a culture we carry within ourselves.”

What began as art instruction in a weekly classroom setting soon expanded to include visits to feast day celebrations and the annual Gathering of Nations Pow-Wow, library field trips and searches on the Internet. The study of traditional Native American culture informed the students’ artwork and strengthened their identity as artists and as advocates of disability culture. While not a part of traditional Native American life, through their artwork and experiences they celebrate it.

In January 2004, a partnership was formed with VSA North Fourth Art Center and the Alfonso Ortiz Center that has included educational programming, poetry readings, performances, visits to Maxwell Museum collections and opportunities for exhibition.

Native American Visions: Illusions of Traditional Life is sponsored by the Alfonso Ortiz Center for Intercultural Studies, the McCune Foundation and the Maxwell Museum Association, and is funded in part by William E. and Judith P. Boebert.

Student requests information from artists for Master's Degree project in
assistive technology. Please contact Katie Jacobson directly through email
address or phone number listed below. Thank you.

Dear Artist,

My name is Katie Jacobson, I am a graduate student in occupational therapy
working on my master's project. I have a minor in art and am very
interested in the use of assistive technology for painting.  I want to be
able to produce a device to give people with limited range of motion a way
to creatively express themselves in the visual arts, and have a leisure
activity that they can enjoy with independence.  My idea is to develop a
mechanical arm that is controlled by a joystick for horizontal movement
and a large button-switch like a BigMacT for vertical movements.

I am contacting you because I am interested in your painting technique and
any adaptations you use to assist you in painting. I would also like to
know if you are familiar with other types of adaptations for painting. Any
information you could contribute would be much appreciated.

Thank you for your time.

Sincerely,

Katie Jacobson, MOTS
