Panasonic Young Soloists Award

2005 Application Guidelines

The VSA arts Panasonic Young Soloists Award, sponsored by Panasonic Consumer Electronics Company, is given annually to two promising young musicians who have a disability, age 25 and under.  The award provides an opportunity for young musicians to earn scholarship funds and perform at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, D.C.

Eligibility

Any musician (instrumental or vocal) with a disability, age 25 and under, is eligible to apply.  All types of music will be accepted - country, classical, jazz, rap, rock, bluegrass, ethnic, etc.

A disability is defined in the Americans with Disabilities Act as a physical or mental impairment that substantially limits one or more of the major life activities of an individual.  (An impairment is a physiological disorder affecting one or more of a number of body systems, or a mental or psychological disorder.)

State Affiliate Selection Process

Many VSA arts state affiliates implement their own Young Soloists Award programs.  Entries received in the VSA arts headquarters from soloists residing in states where the affiliate is conducting a state-level review will be forwarded to that state affiliate for initial evaluation.   The top two entries from that state are then forwarded to the VSA arts headquarters for consideration in the national adjudication.

National Selection Process

A selection committee comprised of music professionals and educators select the two national award recipients.  Selections will be announced in January 2005.

Application Procedures

Each applicant is required to submit the following materials:

* Completed application form

* One-page narrative including biographical information and the reasons why the

    applicant feels he/she should be selected as the recipient of the 2005 VSA arts

    Panasonic Young Soloists Award.  This information should focus on the applicant's

    musical training and experience and not the applicant's disability.

*  Recording (audio, video, CD, or DVD) presenting three (3) musical selections

    Hints: We don't need a professional-quality recording, but the music and artistry

    Should be easily heard.  It isn't necessary for the selections to be from one

    Performance, but they should represent recent performances.  Since the selected

    Performers will not be permitted to use recorded music at the Kennedy Center,

    Please use live music, not recorded, as your accompaniment on the recording.

Application materials should be sent to the address below and postmarked no later than November 1, 2004.

Selection Criteria

The VSA arts Panasonic Young Soloists Award selection committee will evaluate each taped performance in the following areas:

* Technique

* Tone

* Intonation (if applicable)

* Rhythm

* Interpretation

Award Presentation and Performance Opportunities

The VSA arts Panasonic Young Soloists Award will be presented at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, D.C.  State affiliates are encouraged to schedule performances for young soloists at affiliate related events.

Please submit the application form, your narrative, and your recording to:
