Opening Doors 2001
Saturday, December 1 6-10 pm
A gala evening celebrating the creative spirit in all of us!

VSA arts of New Mexico’s major fundraiser, Opening Doors, honors the people in the community and state who have “Opened Doors of Opportunity to persons with disabilities”. The Board of Directors and Chairs Mary Ann Weems and Sheilah Purcell Garcia invite you to join us for this special evening.

This year’s honorees include VSA art’s retired Executive Director and Founder Beth Rudolph;  APS’s art educator Jerald Cross;  business-woman Denise Aguilar of Web Southwest; The Albuquerque Journal;  and the City of Albuquerque.

VSA arts  will also “spotlight” several community leaders including Loretta Armenta of the Albuquerque Hispanic Chamber; Ron Solimon, Indian Pueblo Cultural Center; Elaine Solimon of ARCA, and Richard Nordhaus of the University of New Mexico School of Architecture Design Planning Assistance Center.

There will be a wonderful buffet offering the best of North Valley cuisine and wonderful Gruet wines. Tom Rutherford will MC the festivities introducing the Buen Viaje Dancers and music by Richard Eager & Swing Set.  A fine art and fun gift auction will be perfect for unique gifts for giving and getting.  So, get dressed up, gather your family and friends and plan to attend this festive celebration with us.

Festival del Camino Real
Sunday, December 2
1-4 pm

Come to Festival del Camino Real, a celebration of the arts and culture of the North Valley and the disability community! The first annual Festival del Camino Real will take place at the VSA arts Center of New Mexico, 4904 Fourth Street NW, along both the historic New Mexico Route 66 and the Camino Real.

Neighborhood success story and well-known artist Edward Gonzales will serve as the Honorary Chairperson of the Festival, which is co-sponsored by the newly formed North Fourth/ Camino Real Merchants Association.

Festival del Camino Real will bring together community members of all ages, representing diverse cultural backgrounds, to celebrate the past, present and future of North Fourth. There will be an array of free hands-on arts activities, demonstrations by local talent, free food and entertainment.

A free disability theatre presentation by guest artist David Roche, “The Church of 80% Sincerity” will be presented at 2:00 pm.  In his “brilliantly funny yet moving and mesmerizing one man show,” David Roche gives voice to all who have been hidden in the shadows, regardless of their diversity. This is a performance you will not want to miss.

The Festival also will include an arts and crafts fair featuring artists with disabilities and community artists whose work reflects the diverse cultures of the North Valley. The Disability Culture Exhibit will open in the VSA gallery, featuring work by Alyce Frank, Dara McLaughlin and Enabled Studio Arts apprentice artists.

But that’s not all! The Festival will provide entertainment by Los Reyes de Alburquerque, Indigo Moon and Buen Viaje, a free professional development workshop for emerging artists, and feature author Mary Montaño, who will be on hand to sign her new book, “Tradiciones Nuevomexicanas.”

This project is made possible by New Mexico Arts, a division of the Office of Cultural Affairs, the National Endowment for the Arts and through funding provided by the Western States Arts Federation, AmeriCorps, and the Home Office of VSA arts, under an award from the U.S. Department of Education.
